Defending Myself is a physical exploration of the power dynamics in love. We witness Richard and Aza from the anticipations of first date flirtation and intense heat to the familiarities of daily routine and the "little things" that make all the difference in loving/sharing /giving/receiving/ possessing self or a lover. Writer Carla Stillwell says of her impulse for the piece: "There are few words and no labels that articulate what happens in private between two people. We just don't know that unless we are in it." Therefore, through movement, dance, and layers of sound, she explores what happens when words run out.
